10:00 - 10:30 Chalkboard to BUDDZone™: Updating Africa’s Learning Narrative

The viewpoint of a Washington-based non-profit public policy organisation is that “It will take the average student in sub-Saharan Africa almost 100 years to catch up to the average student in high-income countries…”.  With Africa’s penchant for leapfrogging technologies, and innovators on the continent leveraging technology to drive learning outcomes, how valid is this viewpoint?  Are there success stories out there that are yet to be told?

14:30 - 15:00 Promoting Global Citizenship Through Inclusive Quality Education

My presentation will take participants through understanding of what global citizenship is all about and how education can fix humanity issues brought about by humans that have less critical thinking and problem solving skills. I will seek to address how education can solve issues related to climate change, education inequalities, poverty, environmental degradation, conflict/security, child labour, disease/health risks, unemployment, high population growth, forced human migration, scarcity of fresh water, uneven distribution of resources, infrastructure challenges, high level dependency on borrowing by developing countries. I seek to help participants appreciate how 21st century teaching and learning approaches will spur Higher Order Thinking skills among learners there by focusing to reduce, if not face out human challenges and uphold global citizenship.

16:30 - 17:00 STEM Education : Concept & Philosophy and Global Experiences

The term “STEM education” refers to teaching and learning in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. It typically includes all educational activities and methods across all grade levels— from pre-school to post-doctorate—in both formal (e.g., schools classrooms) and informal (e.g., afterschool programs) settings. However, today the economic and social benefits of scientific thinking and STEM education are widely believed to have broad application for workers in both STEM and non-STEM occupations. As such, many contemporary policymakers consider widespread STEM literacy, as well as specific STEM expertise, to be critical human capital competencies for a 21st century economy. Many countries have their experiences in applying STEM education forms and they achieved success. Thus, the present paper attempted to investigate the concept, specific features, aims and the philosophy of STEM education. Global experiences of applying STEM education all over the world were analyzed.
